The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
